Argentine Tango

Lincolnshire

In the early part of the 20th century, Argentina opened it’s boarders to immigrants, who brought their traditional music and dances with them. These were soon integrated with the local music and dances, which resulted in the tango we now call Argentine Tango.

Initially the immigrants consisted mainly of men, although some brought their wives and daughters with them.

Apart from a visit to a brothel, the only way to meet a woman socially was at the local milonga, where you could only get a dance, if someone was willing to vouch for your dancing prowess!

So men learnt to dance as quickly as possible! They practiced at every spare moment, with the only partners available to them, other men. They practiced in the brothels, in the cafes and any other place where they found themselves with a partner and time to practice.

It was considered quite normal to see two men practicing their dance steps in public and even today it is acceptable for men (or women) to dance together in a tango.

Argentine tango is energetically danced by the young and sedately by the

   old, but always

         with style.
